Located on the north side of the island, Kahului sits in the valley between the West Maui mountains and the slopes of Haleakala. The closest towns are Wailuku to the west and Paia to the east. The most “urban” area of the island, Kahului is where you will find the major airport, heliport, seaport, malls, warehouses, and UH Maui College. The harbor buzzes with large cruise ships and surfers alike.
Most of the island’s car rental facilities and large box stores such as Costco, Target, and Lowes are located here. If you overhear a local saying, “I’m headed to town”, they are probably referring to Kahului.
Before sugarcane, the valley where Kahului now sits was largely uninhabited. In the 1880s, Kahului was home to Maui’s first railroad hauling sugar cane from the mill to the harbor. A town sprouted up around the sugar cane industry but in the year 1900 the bubonic plague wiped out the entire area. In an effort to snuff out the plague, the town was burned to the ground. Present day Kahului was the result of a planned community development by the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Company in 1948. Today’s bustling Kahului is a hub of both business and residential life.
Homes, apartments, condos, warehouses, and communities dot the landscape and make Kahului a great place to find housing, office space, or a place to start a business. While Kahului contains a high concentration of Single-Family Homes, condominium complexes offer a viable, often less expensive option.
The master planned community of Kehalani, which sits on the border of Kahului and Wailuku, consists of 2,800 residences across 550 acres, a mix of single-family homes, townhouses, and condo units.
