WAILUKU

Historic buildings and theaters co-exist with hip boutiques.

Welcome to Wailuku

Nestled up against the lush leeward side of the West Maui Mountains, Old Wailuku town is truly a local Maui experience. Historic buildings and theaters co-exist with hip boutiques, antique stores, authentic Hawaiian artifacts, locally owned coffee shops, bistros, and mom and pop establishments that have been serving up unique finds and iconic treats for generations. Wailuku is also the County Seat, home to the courthouse and many state and county agencies.

With its sweet wooden storefronts, spending the day on Market Street in Wailuku, where you get a slice of cosmopolitan life with a side order of spam musubi, is a treat. The area is undergoing a revitalization project, this charming “downtown” is truly coming into its own.

The area is also rich with Hawaiian History much of which can be discovered through visits to Bailey House Museum, Kaahumanu Church, the ancient Pihana Kalani Heiau, and Iao Valley. The valley was once a sacred burial ground for Hawaiian Aliʻi (royalty) and is the site of one of the most notorious battles in Hawaiian history, the battle of Kepaniwai. In an effort to unify the islands in 1790, King Kamehameha I conquered the army of Maui here, during the siege, the Iao stream was said to have run red for days.

Vacant land options in Wailuku may include Waikapu to the west, Waiehu and Waihee.
